JEFF DAVIS COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) – A mother pleaded guilty Wednesday to causing the death of her 10-month-old son in 2020.
Jessica Lynn Gay, 25, was sentenced to serve a maximum of 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.
Officials say on June 6, 2020, Gay was bathing his 10-month-old baby, Daltyn Hand, at his Hazlehurst residence.
The mother was said to be under the influence of buprenorphine, an opioid used to treat opioid addiction, and venlafaxine, a antidepressant, when she fell asleep.
As Gay poured water into the basin, she fell asleep and did not wake up until her husband, Matthew Hand, ran to the bathroom. An attempt to resurrect Daltyn finally failed and Daltyn died from his drowning in a basin.
“Daltyn’s death is a tragedy,” said Higgins District Attorney. “Although Ms. Gay did not intend to harm Daltyn, she needed to be held accountable for the negligent behavior that led to her son’s death. I hope this case will teach us all to be vigilant and never do anything that puts a child at risk. ”
Charges of murder and second-degree violence against children were dropped in the case.
