Huawei has formalized the release of its Mate 50 and Mate 50 Pro, and good news: the brand’s new flagships are shipping EMUI 13 to markets outside of China, the latest version of its smartphone operating system. The manufacturer has not spoken about the features and changes brought by the update, nor about its availability for other mobile phones of the brand, but we know that it is in an advanced stage of development.

We know that a new version of EMUI is not necessarily accompanied by an upgrade to the latest version of Android, but this should be the case for EMUI 13, which is based on Android 12. The hint that stops thinking that this discovery comes from a. Geekbench benchmark for Huawei Mate 50 Pro. This shows that the smartphone runs under the HarmonyOS 3 interface (it is a Chinese model) and the Android 12 operating system. If EMUI 13 takes many features of HarmonyOS 3, we can guess that it will also be based on Android 12.

EMUI 13 should be based on Android 12 on the Huawei Mate 50 Pro

Huawei is arguably the most difficult smartphone manufacturer to analyze software versions of its smartphones. First, the manufacturer develops EMUI and HarmonyOS parallel according to the market. Then, EMUI numbers don’t exactly follow that of Android, while other brands have changed their naming structure for more readability. But above all, the EMUI version can be based on several versions of Android at the same time depending on the smartphone model. This is the case with EMUI 12, based on Android 11 on some phones, but on Android 10 on others.

Note, Huawei is still not allowed to integrate Google Mobile Services (GMS) into its products. EMUI runs on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), while HarmonyOS only uses some of the open source software resources and libraries from that project. But the Chinese company cannot cooperate with Google in terms of software monitoring, which causes it to lag behind: Huawei will upgrade to Android 12 while Android 13 will be available soon.
