Do you remember Opel? He returns to America but Brazil is left – Prisma

Have you ever heard of Opel? Surely if you were a gamer in the late 1990s and played Fantasy Gran Turismo, you know some of the models that the German car manufacturer made several years ago. Even without a brand here, we know that classics like Corsa, Astra, Zafira and even Monza were produced from Opel. The brand, now part of the Stellatins Group, will return to Colombia and Ecuador. Chile and Uruguay already had a discreet presence of the brand since the beginning of the year. At first, the automaker will only work with the Corsa hatch (which uses the Peugeot 208 platform) and the Mokka crossover in these markets. He will also sing with Crossland, Grandland X and Combo and Vivaro promotions.

The brand should also offer the future Astra in the country with a focus on performance and an engine with a hybrid option. However, the car was not even released in Europe.

NEW PEUGEOT 3008: beauty is everything to beat Compass, Taos, Corolla Cross and Equinox? How much?

Crossover Grandland uses the Peugeot 3008 platform and shares the 163hp 1.6 THP engine we already have here in the Crossover.

Missing what we never had

To better understand why Brazil is so familiar with Opel, it is important to go back to 1929 when the company became a branch of General Motors as a way to conquer the European market. His first known project in Brazil was Rekord C in 1967. From this project was born our Chevrolet Opala (1968-1992), of course after frequent changes in body and interior.

The German automaker was also involved with the Chevette, Monza, Kadett, Omega, Vectra, Astra and Zafira projects. However, the most popular model is the Opel Corsa sold to this day in Europe and now also in South America. The Chevrolet Corsa was launched in Brazil on January 10, 1994 as a 2nd generation model of the German Opel Corsa. The Hatch had a mission to replace the Chevette (also an Opel model) and accomplished it brilliantly. The model was sold until 2012 in the hatch version and 2015 in the sedan.

In 2017, Opel was bought by PSA for 3.8 billion euros. Since then, the brand has become more independent and has expanded its car portfolio. At the beginning of this year, the FCA and PSA groups came together to form the Stellantis Group, one of the largest in the automotive segment.

Currently, the Opel Corsa is sold with a 3-cylinder 1.2 Puretech petrol engine, naturally aspirated or turbocharged, with 75, 100 and 130 hp. Also available is a 1.5-liter diesel with 100 hp. The Mokka SUV comes with a variety of engines like the Corsa.

NEW PEUGEOT 208 worth R$ 95 thousand? Better than Onix, HB20, Polo and Argo?

In any case, Opel should not make an appearance here but we will have a good range of cars especially for the Peugeot and Citroën lines. Fiat’s 1.0 GSE turbo engines are expected for the new Crossover C3 Sporty, Peugeot 208 and even 2008. The 1.3 GSE engine could connect other products from the French range, also something we will see soon thanks to the creation of Stellantis.
