First race for new teammates Nasser Al-Attiyah and Jutta Kleinschmidt in Neom, Saudi Arabia.
Times of rapid rotation, exciting competition, good teamwork and occasional tragedies. The start of the season for the ABT CUPRA XE team has been a lot of events, and is a good sign for the upcoming race.
The second season of Extreme E began in Neom, Saudi Arabia. And the hope is that 2022 will be a good year for the ABT CUPRA XE team. The goal is to collect maximum race and platform victories, to earn the highest number of points in each calendar round. The team is also ready to take it to the next level this season, with Nasser Al-Attiyah joining Jutta Kleinschmidt who is now a veteran at CUPRA. However, not everything goes as planned in the race. Confirmation during the first weekend of Extreme E 2022 in Saudi Arabia.
On Saturday, while it was still important to accelerate in qualifying for Sunday’s final, Al-Attiyah suffered an incident that affected the outcome of the entire race. Sure enough as he was trying to pass, Nasser took the inside line and collided with Carlos Sainz. As a result of this incident, the ABT CUPRA XE team received a penalty kick and was forced to take part in the “Mad Race” (a race that is the first of four cars to enter the final).
Jutta Kleinschmidt and Nasser Al-Attiyah were encouraged and determined to take on top competitors. After a great rotation from Jutta, Nasser managed to move to the second. Unfortunately, that is not enough. In fact, the team missed the final chance by just two and a half seconds.
In any case, to drive the new CUPRA Tavascan XE, the five-time winning Dakar team was a favorite of many people in the desert circuit in Saudi Arabia. With 35% of Nasser Al-Attiyah’s votes and 5% of Jutta Kleinschmidt’s vote, ABT CUPRA XE won the voting record in the “GridPlay” online poll. Added to this are the best times in all sectors, for a race day that was generally successful.
This weekend of the first race, the ABT CUPRA XE team ranks eighth in the overall ranking, earning four points in the drivers and team championships.
Now we will have to wait until May 7 and 8 for the second race of the 2022 Extreme E season. This will take place in Sardinia, Italy. The experience gained during the first cycle will be crucial and the key to better results. The ABT CUPRA XE team does not intend to allow pressure. This is just the beginning!
