Citroen AX, a “little twist” of the 1980s

Citroen AX, a “little twist” of the 1980s

It must be acknowledged, French manufacturers have a very strong tradition in small cars and several models known for their long work: Citroen especially. Suffice it to say 2CV, which for more than 40 years has set a record that is not easy to beat and capable of hiding almost any other vehicle. Still, it was not the only duration of the motor cycle.

The place of honor in this also belongs to Citroen AX. When launched, in fact, this small car closely related to the Peugeot 106 (which arrived several years later) had to replace long-lasting vehicles such as Visa and LNA and provide improvements to the component. Two goals have been achieved successfully.

Child of the wind

Behind the reasons for AX’s positive response was probably the state of his birth: in the early 1980s, in fact, creativity. Visa and LNAderived from the Peugeot 104, it was already outdated, one in layout and the other in style (both with twin cylinder engines), and required modern replacement, perhaps with less skill than Visa, but one that would delight all customer groups. . and more efficient in use.

In those years, efficiency has already been established by aerodynamics and with the design of the new AX engines of the future, efforts were made to slow it down. air resistance and give him sharp and living guidance. To get results and at the same time the best satisfaction from the public, it was preceded by a series of examples presented in a variety of exhibitions that gradually improved the line, almost obvious on the 1986 concept of Xanthia.

The production car presented the same year at the Paris Car Show was for hatchback only 3.5 meters, with straight but letterless lines and a natural back damage integrated into the back gate structure and lighting. Inside there was not all the success of Visa, no satellite controls but the simplest and most common instrument, with only one hand steering clearance.

As for the engine, it was decided to raise a family of 4 jars based on the Peugeot X series and rearranged, always with the front wheel drive. The range included a small 954 cc engine on the base and top, 1.1 and 1.4, respectively 45, 55 and 65 hp, and 4 or 5-speed gearboxes and fitted with front brakes and MacPherson front suspension.
