California regulator accuses Tesla of misleading consumers

One The California regulator accused Tesla of defrauding consumers about your driver assistance systems and filed a lawsuit that could prevent the automaker from selling its production in the stateAmerican media reported on Friday.

O Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) claimed that Tesla touted its automated and self-driving technology as more capable than it actually was, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The company “made or made statements that were false or misleading and had no basis in fact,” says the filing, filed July 28 by the Office of Administrative Counsel.

Tesla vehicles can never “and cannot operate as autonomous vehicles,” the DMV said, a California newspaper reported.

The regulator did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment.

Tesla’s website describes its automation as having “full autonomous driving capability”. “All the driver has to do is get into his car and tell him where to go,” he says. “If you don’t say anything, the car will advise your schedule and take you to your supposed destination.”

A decision in favor of the California regulator could have serious consequences for the electric car maker, including the possible cancellation of licenses that authorize Tesla to manufacture or sell its vehicles in the state, according to the Times.

But a DMV spokesperson told the magazine that the agency wants Tesla to better inform drivers about its self-driving cars and acknowledge the limitations of its technology.

Tesla cars with self-driving software have been involved in 273 crashes in the United States, according to a report released in June by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is investigating the automaker.

In June, Tesla owner Elon Muskhighlighted the importance of fully autonomous driving, saying that without it the value of his company would be “close to zero”.
