Bottas believes Alfa Romeo can win in F1

Valtteri Bottas is convinced that Alfa Romeo has what it takes to win in F1 after his first six months with the team.

The Finn, who moved from Mercedes to the Hinwil team after five years with the German team, was given the task of leading the Alfa Romeo team in F1.

The team finished ninth in the constructors’ standings last year but have made strides so far this year, notably with Bottas’ P5 at Imola.

But despite the team not qualifying for the podium since Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi 10 years ago, they will be competing for victory.

“This year is a shot in the dark”, assessed Bottas. “We have a good gap to the front cars and if we look at Ferrari or Red Bull they can put next year’s car on this year’s car so there is a lot to do. I really believe that it is possible for us to win, because it is the same budget for everyone, so it’s about being creative.”

“If you can think outside the box sometimes and sometimes not, then it is possible, but it requires thinking outside the box mentally in the team,” he said.

F1’s new technical regulations for this season aim to promote closer and more exciting racing, working in tandem with the implementation of budget limits in the series to try to balance the grid.

Setting Alfa Romeo’s timetable for victory, Bottas said: “Next year, of course, it will be difficult, but in two or three years, never say never. This is a good motivation for everyone to push themselves closer to the top, and see what we can do” , he added.
