BMW plug-in hybrids: fire hazard in X5

The commemoration that began in August 2020 is resuming: BMW is reintroducing the X5 plug-in hybrid into a workshop.

The restoration initiated by BMW in August 2020 continues to pick up speed again. Currently, 5,035 plug-ins (1,046 in Germany) are affected worldwide. Two cells on a high-powered battery can rotate for a short time, which increases the risk of fire. This can be corrected by changing specific cell modules. The affected BMW X5 hybrid cars are of production years 2020 and 2021. Restoration can be obtained at KBA under reference number 011653 and by manufacturer under number 0061570600.

What has happened so far:

vehicles and sports from 14 October 2020:

As the manufacturer has now confirmed, BMW is facing major problems in more hybrid cars than previously known. The problem affects the PHEV designs of BMW 3 Series, 3 Series Touring, X1, X2, X3, X5, 2 Series Active Tourer, 7 Series, 5 Series and 5 Series Touring and Mini Countryman.

Short circuit in possible high-voltage batteries

In August, an internal audit revealed that the bead of sweat on a high-voltage battery was not completely removed during production. Now it is about a different battery element in a different production period that was contaminated during the production process, which in extreme cases can cause short circuits in the high-voltage battery. This affects car batteries that were manufactured between January 20 and September 18, 2020, but not all of the cars in the series mentioned.

No more cars are being brought to the customer at the moment to check records. In Germany, about 5,300 vehicles are affected by possible defects from special production lines. About 1,800 of these are in the hands of customers; there is a delivery center for others. About 26,700 vehicles worldwide, of which about 8,000 have already been sold, have this problem. Vehicles that are currently in the hands of customers are not allowed to be charged on the wall box or charging station. Charging while driving is possible with restrictions.

KBA introduces official records

The Federal Vehicle Transport Authority in Flensburg was notified of the technical deficit and instituted an official record on September 14. charging and, if necessary, other steps, “a BMW spokesman told auto motor und sport. August. The experiment in the workshop takes about 30 minutes, and any possible renovation takes longer. The campaign is free for the client and, according to “Kfz-Betrieb”, should start in late October.
