BMW Group uses sustainable colors made from garbage

The BMW Group uses innovative technology as part of its efforts to improve sustainability and take advantage of new options to conserve resources and reduce air pollution from body painting. The BMW group is the world’s first car manufacturer to use matte paints made of biomass instead of crude oil in its European factories. In addition, BMW Group plants in Leipzig and Rosslyn (South Africa) also use sustainable corrosion protection. Recyclable raw materials such as biological waste or waste from sewage treatment plants are used as paint raw materials. The CO2 reserves determined in the process approved by TÜV reach more than 15,000 tons of CO2 emissions by 2030.

“By reducing our use of fossil fuels, we can conserve natural resources and reduce CO2 emissions at the same time. To achieve this, we are increasingly focusing on sustainable innovation in our supplier network, ”says Joachim Post, BMW AG Board Member responsible for procurement and supplier network. “Creative colors based on recyclable materials are an important step in this direction.»

Organic waste replaces fossil fuels

The innovative BASF production process enables the replacement of basic petroleum precursors, such as naphtha, and recyclable raw materials from organic waste, from the earliest stages of pigment manufacturing. This not only reduces the use of fuel resources, but also avoids CO2 emissions related to the production, transportation and processing of crude oil.

The anti-corrosion and matt paints used in the BMW Group plants in Leipzig and Rosslyn are similar in chemical and color to the previously used paints, having the same characteristics as normal body coatings. Since biobased and conventional coatings are produced on the same line, BASF takes the path of mass externally certified mass.

The amount of paint purchased by the BMW Group is calculated to be exactly the same as the amount of bio-naphtha and bio-methane that would be required for 100% oil-free production. The sustainable manufacturing process reduces CO2 emissions from paint production by more than 40%. The two BMW Group plants in Leipzig and Rosslyn produce an average of 250,000 cars a year.
