Mercedes today published information about the start of sales of DRIVE PILOT in Germany. This makes the brand the world’s first car manufacturer with a valid international driver’s license to provide such an old system that works as an option for cars from series manufacturing.

The state-of-the-art automatic operating system (SAE Level 3) will be available from May 17, 2022 as an option for S-Class for EUR 5,000 and for EQS for EUR 7,430 (Driving Assistance Package: EUR 2,430 and DRIVE PILOT: EUR 5,000 ). can be ordered without VAT.

DRIVE PILOT enables customers to hand over system operations under certain conditions when there is heavy traffic or traffic congestion at suitable locations in Autobahn in Germany at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.

After enabling DRIVE PILOT, the system controls speed and distance and directs the vehicle into traffic. Road traffic, occurrence of occurring routes and traffic signals are assessed and monitored. DRIVE PILOT is also sensitive to unexpected traffic situations and handles it independently, for example by maneuvering to evade traffic or by applying the brakes.

Mercedes Automated Automated Driving System (SAE Level 3) is built on the drivers’ help package environment and includes additional sensors that the manufacturer deems necessary for safe operation. This includes mainly radar, LiDAR and cameras, but bright or humidity detectors also provide important data. In line with the successful launch of DRIVE PILOT in Germany, Mercedes intends to obtain a series of official approvals for the two US states of California and Nevada by the end of the year, provided the legal framework there allows.

Operating a highly automated vehicle according to SAE Level 3 requires a system design that must make it possible to manage error reliably – easy and bad. Unnecessary architecture includes brake system, steering wheel, power supply and diagnostic components, such as environmental recognition and calculation of vehicle dynamics.

Batteries, steering engine, wheel speed and various algorithms that the system uses for calculating data are also repeated. In addition, parts of the sensor system are also no longer functional, as they complement each other through their different body concepts (including eyes, ultrasound, radio waves) and thus facilitate safe transmission at all times.

In the unlikely event of an error, the vehicle remains operational due to its unwanted system configuration, so that the DRIVE PILOT can ensure safe transfer to the driver. If the driver does not respond to a request for a replacement within the prescribed time of not more than ten seconds, for example due to a medical emergency, DRIVE PILOT immediately establishes a security emergency center that the following traffic can control.

To do so, the so-called Mental Security Controller continues to calculate the best way in each situation to be able to stand safely. Meanwhile, the DRIVE PILOT trick is designed to keep the car in its lane and avoid collisions with other road users and objects on the road.

One of the basics of automotive driving, for example, is additional control measures: in the case of safety-related operations such as pedestrian detection, Mercedes deliberately provides rules for changing the behavior of the vehicle while the vehicle is operating, for example through personal training. approach. The goal is instead of what is known as “supervised learning” – that is, Mercedes developers define and control what artificial intelligence is allowed to learn.

Before AI software is used on the road, extensive authorization tests are performed to ensure that the AI ​​used reflects the intended behavior in the actual traffic environment. When it comes to pedestrian recognition, AI assists the system in quickly and accurately identifying objects and conditions inside and outside the road.
