Audi’s Focus will sell only electric cars from 2033

German luxury car maker Audi will focus exclusively on electric vehicles by 2033 and stop making cars using internal combustion engines (ICE), a senior official said on Tuesday. Audi India chief Balbir Singh Dhillon has said the carmaker will end production of its current internal combustion engine models and begin a transition to selling only electric vehicles from 2033.

Mr Dhillon said the company would manufacture all existing models with petrol engines and retail until 2032 for its transition to electric vehicles. Responding to a question about incidents of vehicles using batteries catching fire, he said all battery components were individually brought and assembled in factories by trained professionals, with “safety” and “quality” in mind.

After opening the Audi Approved Plus used car show, he said it was the 17th out of 22 scheduled this year. Audi India recorded 101% sales growth in 2021 compared to the previous year and in the first six months (January-June 2022), it increased by 49%, he said.
