Fernando Alonso will drive for Aston Martin in 2023. The two-time world champion will have in Lawrence Stroll’s team what he wanted to pursue in Formula 1: a multi-year contract. And for team boss Mike Krack, it was a pretty good deal.

“It will be a challenge for us. Normally, drivers with this experience don’t want to win, especially if they have already won. Fernando has this unique combination of speed, grit, motivation and experience. For us, he is like the car we are delivering is not enough, we know it will be difficult, ” he said in an interview with the BBC.

“We think having someone like Fernando is very important to take the next step as a team,” added Krack.

Known for his ‘boring’ style and being one of the most demanding drivers on the grid, it’s only natural that Alonso is about to demand a lot from a team that currently has the second worst car on the grid. Krack admits he hopes so too, but the main goal is to have the experienced two-time champion side by side as the English team tries to change the F1 landscape.

“You have to learn to manage the champions, something we have already done with Sebastian. As these drivers are very demanding, they are very difficult to manage”, he pointed out.

“I can’t even say that Sebastian is very difficult to manage if you are open, honest and direct. And I think the same for Fernando. He knows very well that maybe we will not win the first race together. But he we can be sure that we will give our all. and we will hear what he has to say,” he concluded.
