And aside from the 2022 World Cup

“And besides the 2022 World Cup”…

Why this section? Because there are a lot of new products this fall, and of course you expect to see them all on our little site “Mondial de l’auto”, where you usually find new models from all manufacturers.

However, several manufacturers have chosen not to be present at this edition of the Paris Motor Show 2022, a number of new products will not be shown at the Porte de Versailles in Paris, and in particular the one presented in this article. To give you a complete vision and meet your expectations, however we have chosen to publish them on the Caradisiac sub-site dedicated to the Paris Motor Show, but in the special section “And beside the Paris Motor Show” .

If only one model were to remain in the Mercedes-AMG lineup, it would be the C63. Since the W204-generation C-Class was launched in 2007, the brand’s star-studded car has embodied AMG’s legend with its powerful V8 and its unforgettable rumble and aggressive character. In 2015, Mercedes had already ditched the 6.2-liter block in the W205 generation, switching to a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 like all other high-end sports models in the lineup. But that was nothing compared to what the wizard of Affalterbach was preparing for the AMG version of the C-Class of the latest generation W206, launched on the market in 2021. It faces a turbo inline six cylinder from the BMW M3 or a V6 bi-turbo from Audi RS 4, the new C63 S has only a small 2.0-liter four-cylinder!

The new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E-Performance retains the same styling cues as the previous models.

We’ve known about it for a few months already, but it’s still something to discover such a mechanism under the hood of a historic AMG icon. In terms of style, however, the recipes do not change much compared to previous generations. Widened by 76 millimeters at the front compared to the standard C-Class, the car has the usual equipment of ultra-sporty German sports sedans. There are still dual tailpipes at the back as well as a small trunk spoiler, wider fenders and custom 19-inch rims (20-inch optional). The state of the interior won’t surprise those used to the C-Class and Mercedes-AMG either, with an interior full of sporty details and fitted with bolstered seats and support.

The revolution therefore takes place under the hood and one row of cylinders under the engine bay. Positioned longitudinally, the 2.0 liter four-cylinder is equipped for the first time with a turbo whose exhaust gas turbine is electrically assisted. A technique that Mercedes-AMG describes as “inspired by Formula 1”, making it possible to improve the response of the engine as much as possible by significantly reducing the “lag” situation. With a capacity of 476 horsepower (at 6,725 rpm), this block, which has been significantly reworked compared to that of the C43 and SL 43 (itself close to that of the A45 AMG), stands out as the most powerful four-cylinder of all . heat It has a starter-alternator and a 400-volt electrical system. Above all, it combines its power with another electric motor mounted on the rear axle and develops a power of 204 horses (for a maximum of 10 seconds), creating the power of the “hybrid P3” developed by AMG engineers. The precision of 10 seconds seems important because at all times, this electric motor is limited to 70 kW or 95 horses. Including it can give us a total of 571 horsepower. Which remains an advantage compared to the 510 horsepower of the previous model (and the BMW M3 Competition).

Technology, there is a package in this Mercedes-AMG C63 modified to the strict emission standards of the European Union. Also designed “thanks to the experience gained in Formula 1”, the small 6.1 kWh battery weighs 89 kg and benefits from a direct cooling circuit, which allows it to maintain an optimal temperature of 45 degrees even when driving. But there’s no reason to reach for WLTP records: The C63 S E-Performance can only travel 13 kilometers in 100% electricity and claims 6.9 liters/100 km and 156 g/km of WLTP CO2. That’s €2,370 in ecological penalties in 2023, instead of the €50,000 you’d have to pay for the V8. The car also has rear-wheel steering as standard, along with an electronically controlled slip differential. Oh yes by the way, it turned out to be a four-wheel drive. For smoke lovers, there is still a Drift mode to turn it into high speed and play with the rear axle. The electric car is connected to the all-wheel drive and has two speeds (the second of which participates at a maximum of 140 km / h). The internal combustion engine is mated to a 9-speed Speedshift MCT multi-disc clutch instead of a two-speed manual transmission.

Mercedes-AMG promises maximum performance
Mercedes-AMG promises maximum performance

The C63 S E-Performance will offer no less than eight driving modes, from a 100% electric position (“Electric”) to a circuit “Race” through Comfort, “Battery Hold” (maintain a charged battery), Sport. , Sport + or “Slippery” for driving on wet pavement. AMG also promises “typical AMG sound”…artificially amplified through the car’s speakers (sic). It remains a figure that hurts a little for a modern sports family sedan: 2,111 kg listed on the technical sheet. 400 kg more than the original C63 AMG S and even 250 kg more than the Tesla Model 3 Electric Performance burdened by its large batteries! Performance is evidently continuing (0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and 280 km/h electronically limited with the optional AMG Driver’s Package), but do not compromise too much for a more powerful machine than the BMW M5 , E63 S or Audi RS 6 unit high. The maximum torque is declared at 1020 Nm! Come on, all that’s left is to try it out to see how this amazing technical paper stacks up in terms of driving sensations. And see if cleaners should be worried about it…
