Sold in 2022 under the cover of Qashqai, Nissan e-Power technology plans to turn on the electric engine through the operation of the heat engine. Not too new or better on paper but still easy to use!

Completely updated in 2021, the Nissan Qashqai did not do things in half in the engine department. Despite the inevitable success of diesel in this unit of family SUVs, the Japanese have just scratched it from their list. Since the opening of the orders, so customers have only a choice between two versions of the turbo 4-cylinder 1.3: 140 hp 2-wheel drive or 158 hp 2 and 4-wheel drive.. Originally from Renault, this engine must receive 12V hybrid services, ie the smallest network. A trick that allows Qashqai to call itself a small hybrid but which, in fact, only saves its driver 4 g of CO2 / km on the 140 hp version. The scam, therefore, is not enough to reduce Nissan’s carbon footprint by more than a year. To do this, the Japanese rely on its Qashqai electronic variant, called e-Power.

A well-concealed 3-cylinder turbo

Expected by the year 2022, this new engine really does not fit right now in Europe. On the “spy” pictures made by our Spanish counterparts from Motor.es, it is impossible to see that this model of “zero emission” attaches a heat engine, in this case, a 3-cylinder 1.5 turbo of 157 hp. But despite this comfortable power, this gasoline unit has no grip on the running gear and only serves as a generator. He is the one who supplies the transmitted electricity to the 190 hp electric motor and 330 Nm of torque.which drives the wheels and therefore allows the Japanese to maintain its electric vehicle condition despite the presence of a gasoline engine under the hood.

CO2 but no need to charge again!

Using a heat engine to start an electric car is not a new phenomenon. Already used by Nissan and Mazda in Japan, this technology was also selected by BMW for its i3 REX. Released a few years ago, this version of the range extender had a small 650cc twin that involved power supply when the battery was empty. A 9-liter petrol tank then made it possible to travel 100 kilometers in an electric state and prevent damage.

In the case of Qashqai, a 55-liter fuel tank will no doubt allow for longer standing. But, surprisingly, it will not be possible to drive in a special silence for electric vehicles for more than 2 or 3 miles. Because the battery on the Japanese floor is too low to take this SUV too far. As soon as it is released, it will need to be quickly upgraded to 3 cylinders. In addition, this heavy kinematics will not necessarily suit the use of kWh / km of Qashqai e-Power, as well as its 1.5 turbo will still emit CO2, which is the opposite target of an electric car. On the contrary, no more need to find a socket and wait a long time to recharge the battery, a full gas tank for 3 minutes will be enough to put it back on immediately.
