What Alfa Romeo will do with the second driver position on the grid for the 2023 season formula 1? Valtteri Bottas is guaranteed, but Guanyu Zhou still. Team boss Fréderic Vasseur praised the player but made it clear he would see more of him before putting pen to paper for a second year in F1.

Vasseur stressed that the next five races are very important for Zhou, as he has already been to all the traditional tracks in Belgium, Holland, Italy, Singapore and Japan.

“The consensus was very clear with Zhou: he had to do a good job and improve. He knows the next four or five guidelines, and we hope he will go further. I know very well that we did not help much in terms of reliability and points, but so far, he is doing better than expected” , he said in an interview with Racer magazine.

“But everyone knows that when you have that kind of decision, the most important event is the last one. We have a contractual clause that allows us to clarify, so we are in a comfortable position”, he said.

What is interesting is the desire for sponsorship from China, a country that counts Zhou as its first representative in the history of F1.

“We have two sponsors from China. One of them had worked with us in 2019 and returned this year, and the other was recently signed. China is not an easy market today because of Covid and the fact that we don’t have a doctor there at the moment. Now it started to get a little lighter [e espero que fique mais fácil].

“THE F1 signed a new TV deal in China and the coverage will be better compared to before. The impact of Covid is still huge, but it will be a great opportunity to get back on the calendar, of course, although it will not be that easy. The culture is different, it takes time,” he said.

“It’s not a matter of having a Chinese driver in the car. If you want something to be interesting, it has to do well – probably more so in China than anywhere else. Zhou got off to a good start,” he concluded.

THE formula 1 he is still on summer vacation and will only return between the 26th and 28th of August, in Spa-Francorchamps, and the Belgian GP.
