After 65 years, Maserati is returning to single-seater racing in Formula E

Maserati announced on Monday night (10) that it will compete in the Formula E World Championship from the 2022/23 season, marking its return to single-seater racing after 65 years. The last time the Italian brand competed in the single-seater category ( or formula, as they are sometimes called in Brazil) and his team was in 1957, in Formula 1, when it won the drivers’ title with the Argentinian Juan Manuel Fangio.

Part of the Stellantis group since the beginning of last year, Maserati intends to launch an electric variant of the MC20 sports car by 2025. Because of this, it is studying the use of Gen3, the new Formula E car, to develop power. train for its luxury sports cars. . DS, another Stellantis brand in the division, will share hardware solutions with the Italian team, but on the software side the two companies will work independently.

“The Maserati brand today is returning to the future, returning to its automotive roots,” said Maserati CEO Davide Grasso at a press conference. “I am very happy and excited to announce that Maserati is the first Italian brand to join the Formula E World Championship from 2023, season nine. It couldn’t be a better way to start the new year.”

Gen3 will be used from the 2022/23 season and will bring an increase in power in qualifying (350 kW) and racing (300 kW) and a battery with high recharging capacity. This will enable, for example, that, for the first time, a race with automatic electric seats has pitstops.

Maserati has not yet announced the pairing of its drivers or engineering corps that will take part in the Formula E operation. In addition to the Modena brand, so far, the Venturi and McLaren teams have confirmed their presence this season. Mercedes-Benz announced in August last year that it will withdraw from the championship after the end of the current season.

Traditional in motorsport

Maserati was one of the best teams in the first decade of Formula 1, in the 1950s, having produced cars for players such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, José Froilán González and Alberto Ascari. With Fangio, the Italian automaker won two world titles (1954 and 1957).

In the late 1950s, Maserati withdrew its team from the division, but continued as a supplier of engines and private cars until the middle of the following decade. Meanwhile, it followed in the World Endurance Championship, where it placed second in 1956, 1957 and 1961.

After the merger with Citroen in the late 1960s, the Modena brand reduced its athletic activities, participating occasionally in the touring and rallying categories and private events. It would have its own team again from 2004, in the lost GT World Championship, where it achieved great success, becoming the runner-up in 2010. The following year, the Italian brand left the championship.
