A divorce was announced between Volvo Cars and ACEA

Volvo Cars has announced its intention to withdraw from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) by the end of 2022. The topic of the end of the fuel car in 2035 would create a difference between the group and the organization.

After Stellantis, Volvo Cars for its part announces its withdrawal from ACEA.

Weeks are consecutive and identical for ACEA. On June 13, 2022, the Stellantis group announced its decision to withdraw from the organization. The approach of the group led by Carlos Tavares was quickly followed by Volvo Cars three weeks later. The Swedish manufacturer has expressed its intention to leave the fleet of the European defender because of “differences in the level of the zero carbon strategy”.

“We have concluded that the strategy and sustainability expectations of Volvo Cars are not fully aligned with ACEA’s position and way of working at this stage,” explains the group in a press release.

On June 29, the European Commission’s proposal on the end of the sale of hot cars in 2035 was approved by the 27 Member States of the European Union when voting on the text part of “Fit for 55”. At this event, ACEA expressed itself against this mission by being eager to give space to hybrid vehicles.

Different strategies, same effect

But the departure of Stellantis and Volvo Cars did not follow the same reasons. For the first time, it is clear that ACEA’s inability to give its voice to the European authorities has created a problem.

While for Volvo Cars, it is this attempt to preserve the temperature that pushes the manufacturer to leave the fleet. The group had already expressed its intention to become a “climate neutral” company by 2040. Its leaders had signed a letter written by Transport & Environment to ban fossil-fuel vehicles for private and public use from 2035.

By bringing together 16 of Europe’s leading manufacturers of cars, trucks, buses and coaches, the association could see the list of manufacturers leaving its ranks grow by the end of the year.
