Auto123 goes one step further 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and First Drive Grand Wagoneer.
Now, we can say that Jeep is close to all utility niches in the market. With the addition of the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, Jeep is looking to carve out a niche in the lucrative luxury utility market.
Jeep told us the oral service that there has been a discussion about the importance of restoring the wooden panels to decorate the design of these new models, to make a strong nod to the past. But, in the end, we gave up.
Currently, GM with the trio of Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade occupies most of this segment. Ford follows in second place with its two Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. These models meet 70% of the parts requirement, at least for the entry-level Tahoe and Expedition models. However, Jeep wants to play on two fronts: with the Wagonner, dressed very low, we want to compete with the Tahoe and the Expedition, while with the Grand Wagoneer, we will monopolize the customers of the Escalade and the Navigator, and even play with him. BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS buyers!
In Canada, the Jeep Wagoneer starts at $69,995. In turn, the Grand Wagoneer is offered from $ 100,995 and, for example with good equipment, we can consider a price of around $ 130,000.
Despite its name, Grand Wagoneer is not big, but it is more luxurious and offers more powerful mechanics. The Wagoneer model has the familiar 5.7-liter V8, which develops 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque. It’s equipped with the eTorque system, a 48-volt battery pack that helps multitask and add 130 lb-ft of torque. As for the Grand Wagoneer, it gets a more powerful 6.4-liter V8, which produces 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. It allows you to accelerate from 0-100 km / h in six seconds.
However, that is not all. Stellantis advertises a towing capacity of 4,536 kg (10,000 lb) for the Wagoneer. It’s classy, because no other car in this segment does it better.
Being a Jeep family vehicle, all models sold in Canada have four-wheel drive and the Selec-Terrain system that offers five driving modes: Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow and Sand/Mud. The Quadra-Lift air suspension (optional on the Wagoneer and standard on the Grand Wagoneer) increases the ride height by more than 9 cm and, depending on the model, the buyer has a choice of three 4×4 systems: the Quadra-Trac I full-time system ., the Quadra-Trac II with a two-speed transfer case, or the Quadra-Drive II with a higher slip rear differential.
With a price tag approaching $100,000, the Grand Wagoneer’s expectations are even higher. However, the first thing you notice when you sit on board is that the Grand Wagoneer has more screens than the Wagoneer. Both have a central screen, but the Grand Wagoneer is larger (12 inches vs. 10.1 inches). Then, the Grand Wagoneer has a total screen area of 75 inches, including a 10.25-inch screen reserved for the front passenger. So at the end you can control the navigation and the phone connection, as well as control the rear entertainment system.
A second 10.25-inch screen is also located below the Grand Wagoneer’s main screen. Rear passengers, on the other hand, have a 10.25-inch center screen and two 10.1-inch entertainment screens each. For the middle seats, the buyer also has a choice between two captain’s chairs and three bench seats.
Both the Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers have plenty of connectivity options: Alexa virtual assistant, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto wireless, SiriusXM 360L, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, Tom-Tom navigation and FireTV. This latest system provides access to hundreds of movies and TV shows just like on the plane!
The new Uconnect5 system is called to manage all these features. In addition, when you park the car, you can activate Relaxation mode which uses the screen and lighting to create a peaceful atmosphere.
A 23-speaker McIntosh MX950 entertainment system is available on the top Wagoneer and most Grand Wagoneer trims. Alternatively, Grand Wagoneer buyers can opt for a 1375-watt amplifier.
Big and ambitious
Will the Grand Wagoneer stand up to the competition? The short answer is yes. It’s not as big as the Suburban, but it’s similar to the Tahoe and Yukon Denali (the latter being the obvious Grand Wagoneer rival).
Like Ram, which offers the best interiors for pickup trucks, the Grand Wagonner offers a high-end finish. We shamelessly compare ourselves here to models from Cadillac, Lincoln and Mercedes. You have different combinations of natural wood and leather that range from honey colors to shades of lavender blue to darker colors. Smells like beautiful skin!
Electric heated and ventilated seats also offer a massage function. They’re not as good as the German competition, but they compare favorably with Lincoln and Cadillac.
Driving is very easy, which is surprising for such a big beast. However, you will have to be prepared to use a lot of gasoline. The 6.4-liter engine in our Grand Wagoneer gave us an average fuel consumption of about 16 liters per 100 kilometers, driving on the highway and being the only one on board. The 5.7 liter engine and 48-volt battery is a little less ambitious, but hardly.
Both models have independent rear suspension which increases the driving comfort. Our tester also had a variable climate control, which could raise the ride height by 9 cm (3.6 in.) or lower it by 1.2 cm (0.5 in.), as well as hide the error coating without a problem. It also had a ground clearance of 25 cm (10 in) and a water crossing capacity of 0.6 m (2 ft).
Jeep has every intention of stealing market share from its American competitors with its new duo, and the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer have the right ingredients to do so. Now the question is whether buyers will be willing to shell out six figures for a product bearing the Jeep name.
